The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss (U.S. Title: Romance and Riches)

E. Phillips Oppenheim's popular novel was first filmed in 1920 (directed by and starring Henry Edwards) as a five-part serial that was also released in feature form. It was filmed again in 1936 and Cary Grant as the star of an independent British film not only made it a major coup at the time, but also caused it to be reissued twice as his popularity grew. In the U.S. it was retitled Romance and Riches and cut by two reels, but tonight's version is of the full original British version. It's a lightweight tale of a millionaire's episodic adventures (making it easy for the U.S. version to be edited down!), both romantic and melodramatic, as he accepts a wager to prove himself a man by living a full year without access to his wealth....a popular theme in the Depression years. Most of the budget probably went on Grant's salary and that of his Hollywood co-star as production values are modest, but it's a pleasing little film. William K. Everson
