American Icons: Program 1
"Certain images have a particularly American resonance-the car, the movies, a main street parade; others suggest, or have come to stand for the U.S.-its presidents, the flag. Tapped by the mass media for their rich cultural associative value, much of these icons' significance is in their proliferation to the point of instant recognition. The media, in its omniscience, is both creator and part of our collective image reading. TV sets and TV footage, movie stars, pop songs, newspaper ads and articles abound in tonight's films with a casual familiarity; but through manipulation, recreation and repetition, they become strangely unfamiliar. With their re-readings, purposeful misreadings and personal interpretations of familiar icons, these filmmakers imagine another image of Americanness."
