American Matchmaker
Ulmer may not have been a Yiddish speaker but he knew shtick when he saw it, and this charming urban comedy has plenty of it. Leo Fuchs, a debonair actor known as “the Yiddish Fred Astaire,” stars as Nat Silver, whose success in business is unmatched in his personal life: he's been left at the altar seven times. On the convoluted advice of his Yiddishe Mama he decides to investigate love, setting up shop as a “human relations counselor” in the heart of the Bronx. This very American matchmaker with a psychiatrist in his employ eventually learns that Mama herself is part of the problem. A sultry nighttime skyline sets the New York mood, which Ulmer quickly takes indoors, re-creating in-studio a series of lovingly accurate interiors. The dialogue's Yiddish smartly sprinkled with English bespeaks the journey of all the characters, seeking the balance of old and new that will make the match with America work.
