And Life Goes On
In the aftermath of the earthquake in northern Iran which killed some 50,000 people, director Abbas Kiarostami returned to the setting of Where Is the Friend's Home? to find out the fate of the two young actors who played in the film. His search became the dramatic source for And Life Goes On, an Iranian road movie traveled by father and son. The pair go to Quoker, the home town of the two boys, and along the way meet earthquake survivors valiantly working to reconstruct their lives. "The enthusiasm for life that I witnessed," says Kiarostami, "gradually changed my perspective. The tragedy of death and destruction grew paler and paler." By pushing the limits of fiction and documentary, the filmmaker gently engages the viewer in cinema's process of transforming reality. The strength of his art lies in the simplicity and primacy with which he renders his subjects, as well as the steadfastness of his characters' desire for truth-even when that truth is unexpected.-Toronto Festival of Festivals
