Animations by Michaela Pavlátová and Joanna Priestley

Artists in PersonThe lively and inventive animations of Joanna Priestley are full of joy and unexpected pleasures. They range from object and puppet animation to drawings and paintings on paper. Tonight she presents a selection of her prolific work, including her most recent, Surface Dive (2000, 7.5 mins), an abstract film inspired by a diving trip to a Yucatan lake. She-Bop (1988, 8 mins) celebrates Goddess spirits, while All My Relations (1990, 5 mins) satirizes romance. Pro and Con (1993, 9 mins) is a powerful animated documenary about life in prison. Grown Up (1993, 7 mins) whimsically looks at middle age, while the abstract Utopia Parkway (1997, 5 mins) was inspired by the boxes of Joseph Cornell. Czech animator Michaela Pavlátová is currently living in the Bay Area. Her humorous and perceptive, wonderfully drawn animations often center on human relations, in particular the vagaries of male/female interactions. In Word, Words, Words (1991, 8 mins), a man and woman attempt to connect in a cafe filled with vivid conversations. In the intricate Repete (1995, 9 mins) a man takes his dog for a walk and unleashes disorder in everyone's routine...or does he? Uncles and Aunts (1992, 4 mins) is an animated photo album, while the delightful This Could Be Me (1995, 4 mins) takes us into the artist's studio. Forever and Forever (1998, 15 mins) combines home movies and animation to movingly celebrate a marriage.-Kathy Geritz
