Another Part of the Forest

“Evil, like everything else, takes root somewhere, and in Another Part of the Forest Lillian Hellman gets around to explaining how the vile Hubbards of The Little Foxes, filmed in 1941, came by their viciousness.... Hellman reveals that the Hubbards inherited their greed and meanness from their old man, Marcus, a Civil War profiteer and traitor. In taking another penetrating look at this monstrous family, Miss Hellman has spun a fascinating drama which simmers with intrigue and conflict and explodes in a harrowing cinematic burst of greed and hatreds. Pozner has preserved the spirit of the play in his screen treatment, and Gordon's direction gives a fluency to scenes which might easily have become static due to the profuseness of the dialogue. However, much of the talk is sharp and biting, for it is tinged with irony.”
