Aparajito (The Unvanquished)

Admission $2.00 per film, or 3 films for $5.00

“Aparajito
continues the story of the Bengali family after they leave their home to travel to the holy city of Benares on the banks of the Ganges. This film is primarily the story of Apu's adolescent encounter with education, and of the deaths of his parents. The Benares sequences are initially impressive, and eventually become a summation of the Indian temperament - for once, the East is open to Western eyes with a fresh, documentary effectiveness. Ray's sense of humor is focused on the village school system of India, with its pompous principals and excitable pupils. In the latter half of the film, when Apu leaves his mother to go to the University of Calcutta, there is a subtle change in mood: the drama of city life contrasts with the simplicity of Apu's background, and the characterization of Apu lies in the heart of modern India.” --Albert Johnson
