Apprehension (Die Beunruhigung)

“Shot in black and white, cinema verité in style and intensely downplayed in tone, Apprehension offers a panorama of Berlin as seen through the eyes of a woman facing death. Like Agnes Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7, Apprehension is a day-long chronicle of a woman as she confronts the possibility of cancer. Although beginning and ending with Inge Herold three years after a mastectomy, the structure of the film forms something of a ‘quest' movie, as its protagonist moves through a series of encounters with co-workers, her 15-year-old son, married lover, and various friends, only one of whom comprehends the anxiety of her situation. Through Inge's eyes objects, events and gestures take on a heightened presence, as if being seen for the first--or rather, the last--time.” Tony Safford, AFI
