The Armor of God

Jackie Chan has reigned as Hong Kong's action/comedy demi-god since the late '70s. His career is driven by one prime directive: to dish out as much pure delight to his audience as he can concoct. His films are giddy, hog-wild orgies of acrobatics, kung fu, slapstick, death-defying stunts, and wonderfully wanton destruction. One of the most gifted physical performers to grace the screen since the days of the silent comedians, Chan vaults headlong through his films with "look Ma, no gravity" abandon. In Armor of God, Chan plays a self-styled high-society Robin Hood calling himself the Asian Hawk. A Yugoslavian religious cult has kidnapped an old flame of his, keeping her drugged in their mountaintop castle. The ransom: an ancient holy relic which Jackie must steal and deliver to them. The premise, as in most of his films, is merely an excuse for his heart-stopping set-pieces, which here include an amazing battle with a gang of leather-clad kung fu giantesses. Don't miss the closing credits: you'll see not only the usual hilarious out-takes, but a botched stunt that almost killed Chan and resulted in brain surgery. --Tod Booth
