Army of Lovers or Revolt of the Perverts

Filmed in 1978 in San Francisco and all across the U.S.A., Army of Lovers is the latest film essay on gay culture by the young German filmmaker Rosa Von Praunheim, who made the provocative documentary It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse But the Situation in Which He Lives in Germany in 1971. Shown in the fall of 1977 in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Berkeley and other cities, It Is Not the Homosexual... proved the most controversial and disturbing film by a gay activist filmmaker ever released in this country. Army of Lovers: “Von Praunheim chronicles the rise of homosexual activism in the U.S. in this strong, very personal, and above all, honest documentary. In blunt, direct, sometimes quite graphic sequences, Von Praunheim explores without rhetoric the entire gay subculture which, in its complexities and diversities, touches all facets of American life. As a European, Von Praunheim may be likened to John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) in his ability to delve perceptively, yet without bias, into the layers of American society.” --Filmex '79
