Artists and Models Abroad

This screwball comedy involving a runaway bride and a stranded acting troupe (who have the good fortune to be exiled in Paris) is a singular opportunity to view the work of some of the most prominent couturiers of this century. The twenty-minute fashion show sequence, "The Palace of Feminine Arts," features clothing by Schiaparelli, Lanvin, Patou, Paquin, The House of Worth, among others. There's some indication that styles were slightly tweaked to bring them to Hollywood standards of flash, but even the most iconoclastic couturiers occasionally made adjustments in their creations for their customers. Director Leisen, recovering from a heart attack while directing this big-budget (and high-grossing) production, began his career as a costume designer and usually contributed at least one dress to his films. (Look out for the white satin number with the birds.) Leisen was probably the best qualified director in Hollywood to film a fashion show.-Lee Amazonas
