The Backyard

Artist in Person, with Special Guest The Lizard!

Introduced by Dr. Mike Lano, noted wrestling journalist.

"I would do anything to be a WWF superstar, as long as it wasn't seriously illegal or involved eating people." Wrestling wannabes come in all forms; they're mostly beefy guys with theme costumes, ready to jump in a ring built for yuks. WCW and WWF, the pro arena, reward a fortunate few. But there's another kind of wrestling thriving in the unregulated domain of the backyard, a punk antidote to televised grapples. Hardcore "backyard" throws out the rules-chokeholds and piledrivers are replaced by broken glass, staple guns, and mousetraps. The matches are ritualized bloodlettings between young guys like Chaos, founder of Death Match Wrestling; the Gates Brothers, who have their dire Three Stages of Hell; and The Lizard, Modesto's man of heart and determination. Paul Hough's eye–gouging The Backyard takes us down to the mat, where bruised bodies squirm in tangles of barbed wire. In one searing bout, Scar takes on The Retarded Butcher, whose mother is weeping on the sidelines. "Not the thumbtacks, not the thumbtacks. Oh, god. Nooooo," she yelps helplessly.
