Sanpei Shirato's serial cartoon (1959-1962), which was widely popular and strongly supported by students and left-wing activists in the late 1960s, was adapted for film by Nagisa Oshima, who edited the still images of Shirato's drawings using various animation methods. Set during the bleak and violent Middle Ages, this is the tale of a samurai's son who seeks revenge for his father's death.
