The Basket
Recommended for ages 7+. In 1918, two German war orphans, 12-year-old Helmut and his 17-year-old sister Brigitta, are relocated from a WWI government internment camp to a small wheat-growing town near Spokane, Washington. What they confront in this insular community is overt prejudice and a strong suspicion of outsiders. But when a new schoolteacher (Peter Coyote) arrives, he brings with him both a basketball and German opera records-two things never before experienced in Waterville-and attitudes are destined to change. With beautiful cinematography and exceptional performances by Coyote, Karen Allen, and Joey Travolta.
