The Battle

A war romance set against age-old East-West conflicts, featuring Charles Boyer as a Japanese naval captain who sacrifices his wife's, and ultimately his own, honor to further the development of the Japanese navy. “At the time the NY Times called this the most sophisticated film to come out of France. Even then they were a little generous, and it has dated, but it's still a fascinating essay on the conflicts of Western and Eastern honor, and an example of the multi-lingual productions so much in vogue then. Charles Boyer and John Loder starred in the British, French and German versions; Annabella was in the two European editions (not too convincingly Oriental!) while Merle Oberon took over her role for the English version, the one we are showing.” W.K.E.
