The Battle of Paris

“A curious combination of musical, melodrama and comedy, The Battle Of Paris is first and foremost a Gertrude Lawrence vehicle. She comes over as very much of a ‘star' in every sense of the word, and is perhaps given excessive opportunities to sing. While not a particularly notable film, it is certainly an invaluable record of a major star persona. Perhaps in partial retaliation against this, director Florey makes a little more than the most of the Paris underworld sequences, and these episodes take on very much the flavor of a French serial!”
