Battleship Potemkin

Sergei Eisenstein's powerful revolutionary epic of mutiny aboard a battleship in the Black Sea fleet will be shown tonight in a mint condition, 35mm print. Fearful of its revolutionary message, non-communist nations scrutinized and re-edited prints of Battleship Potemkin before distribution, resulting in numerous inauthentic, sanitized versions. Interestingly, it was John Grierson himself who helped to prepare the versions of Potemkin shown in America and England. Impressed with the verisimilitude of the film's location shooting and Eisenstein's dynamic editing, Grierson drew on Eisenstein's methods in the making of Drifters. How successful he was in adapting the style of Soviet montage to the British documentary will become apparent tonight in this rare screening of the two works together.
