A comedy involving a group of Polish actors and their attempts to outwit the Nazis, this witty, satirical film was attacked at the time of its release for its “callous, tasteless effort to find fun in the bombing of Warsaw,” but now its black humor can be better appreciated, not to mention its running gags and the steadily rising crescendo of comedy toward the climax, or the inspired casting of Jack Benny as a Polish ham Hamlet, and Carole Lombard in what was tragically her last performance.
