The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend

Sturges' last American film was, aptly, a Western (his only one), notable for Betty Grable's aggressive performance as a sexy Annie Oakley named Freddie, who "gives 'em a start, but shoots 'em in the end." Which is precisely where she shoots a certain Judge O'Toole by accident (an "accident" which occurs three times in the film), and then escapes to the town of Snake City, posing as the schoolmarm Hilda Swandumper. Now, Snake City is a typical Western (via Hollywood) town; but its inhabitants are pure Sturges: "The American melting pot, with all its color and levity, dominates this Western community as it had the tenement blocks in Christmas in July and the Chicago of The Great McGinty. Mr. Hingeman, Mr. Smidlap, Dr. Schultz, Mr. Jorgensen..... Besides the preponderantly immigrant population, there are the more than slightly tongue-in-cheek villains. The Bassermans (Mr. Basserman and sons) are the moronic evildoers of the town. They are brilliantly comic creations...." ("Preston Sturges, An American Dreamer) Rudy Vallee plays his usual Sturges millionaire whose pince won't stay on his nez, and Cesar Romero is Blackie Jobero, the two-timing love of Freddie's life.
