Behind the Local Curtain: Student Documentaries

Student filmmakers from the Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, and Film Studies departments explore characters and movements that shape the Bay Area in seven short films. Spend a day with a Richmond elementary school principal as she directs, disciplines, and shows extraordinary perseverance in her demanding position in A Cut Above (Jerry Yoon, 9 mins). Journey through Sohail Afiat's reflections on the UC Berkeley experience in Dorm Life (13 mins). Delve into the question of sexual objectification in Trix or Treats (Bianca Darville, 9 mins), featuring interviews and performance footage of San Francisco go-go dancers. Experience the auditory and visual textures of the Sproul Plaza drummers in One Good Thing about Music (Franck Rey-Herme, 8 mins), followed by a contemplation of one man's healing experience through body suspension in HOOKED (Lorna MacMillan, Francisco Nanclares, Erica Nyhus, 19 mins). Calles de Dolores (Michael Cozzi, Jelani Mahiri, Leslie Butler, 16 mins) takes us to San Francisco's Mission district to investigate the history and politics of undocumented migrant day laborers. The program concludes with Measure FF: 100 More Cops Meets 100 Conscious Minds (Maristella Huerta, Marcie Chin, 13 mins), in which an Oakland proposition is met with fierce opposition from local activists, budget analysts, and a family devastated by police brutality.
