Behind the Seen: Walter Murch on Feature Film Editing
A key figure in the Northern California film scene for over thirty years, Walter Murch is widely recognized as “the film editor's editor.” This consummate craftsman supervised the sound editing on The Godfather (1972), American Graffiti (1973), and The Godfather Part II (1974); won a double British Academy Award for best picture editing and best sound on The Conversation (1974); garnered his first Oscar for best sound for Apocalypse Now (1979), and went on to win unprecedented double Oscars for film editing and sound mixing on The English Patient (1996). For this special event, Murch will be joined in conversation by screenwriter and film director Charles Koppelman, author of Behind the Seen: Walter Murch on Feature Film Editing, Final Cut Pro, and the Future of Cinema. The book is a fascinating behind-the-scenes account of Murch's editing work on Anthony Minghella's Cold Mountain, giving an inside view of the editor's process and the relationship between technology and the art and craft of moviemaking. Murch and Koppelman will sign copies of the book, which is also available in the Museum Store ($34.99, paperback; 10% members' discount given to everyone who purchases the book at the event).
