Behind the Wall

“Krzysztof Zanussi's Behind The Wall is a sensitive and emotionally harrowing examination of the gulf of communication between people, more modest and intimate than his Family Life but no less powerful. The cast is virtually limited to two: Jan, a successful and self-assured young scientist, and Anna, an insecure would-be scientist, with little hope of ever succeeding in anything. They live in the same block of flats and her clumsy, pathetic attempts to establish a relationship are the core of the film. His rejection of her, both in an official capacity and on an emotional level, pushes her towards yet another failure, as a suicide. Maja Komorowska, the girl from Family Life, is especially brilliant as Anna.”
