The Berkeley New Wave: Student Films from UCB
Tonight's program is a tribute to student filmmaking and features works made in Ernie Gehr's Avant-Garde Film course and Jeffrey Skoller's The Language of Cinema course. Avant-Garde Film is taught once a year in conjunction with screenings at PFA. Students have the option of making a film or video as their final project. The Language of Cinema, the first film-production course at Berkeley, covered theoretical and critical concerns usually addressed in the written scholarship of Cal's film curriculum, such as narrative structure, concepts of editing and the use of sound. Here the students explored them by producing films and videos of their own. The students completed a total of four projects: First, they made short video self-portraits with the purpose of revealing the filmmaker through the medium. A montage exercise honed editing skills. Group projects allowed students to work as a crew and explore camera techniques. (One included a workshop with visiting Yugoslavian filmmaker Dusan Makavejev who directed the students to make a video about a tree.) The students produced final projects that applied skills and techniques learned from the previous exercises.-Tim Fox Curated by Tim Fox and Jennifer Paige, students in the UC Berkeley Film Studies program.
