Between Two Worlds (Barry Greenwald, Canada, 1990)
: This beautiful and fascinating film tells the true story of a national figurehead: Joseph Idlout, whose image graces the back of the old Canadian two-dollar bill. As this fact alone might suggest, Idlout was a "model Eskimo," both a guide and a symbol for white traders and government officials for many years. He appeared in classic ethnographic films. This one, however, is of a different nature: Idlout's son takes us on a poignant journey through his father's life, his crystallization into an out-of-time image, his very sad demise into alcoholism, and ultimate suicide. He is, indeed, a symbol of his people.
