Beware
"Beware is among the most engaging of the Library of Congress' extensive collection of all-black films originally released for black audiences. It's a vehicle for alto saxophonist and rhythm-and-blues singer Louis Jordan, who stars in a standard let's-put-on-a-show-to-save-the-school plotline. But with the hot swing here, one can savor students' temptations toward boogie-woogie ten years before such storylines were adapted for white rock-and-rollers ('Ah, the heck with the lesson; how about playing us a number, Mr. Jordan?'). Louis Jordan proves as engaging an actor as musician, and, after a ludicrously stiff opening about financial troubles at 'Ware College,' Beware fills with infectious music and proves terrific fun."
