Big Li, Young Li and Old Li (Da Li, Xiao Li he Lao Li)

This fast-paced comedy gently satirizes the clichés of propaganda and was one of the films (along with Two Stage Sisters) for which Xie Jin was ostracized at the start of the Cultural Revolution. The story takes place in a Shanghai meat-processing plant where “Old” Li keeps a close eye on production. His sports-enthusiast son, “Young” Li wants to start a fitness program and persuades his fellow workers that daily “radio exercises” are the very thing to liven up their work day. But his efforts are continually thwarted by his conservative father. When the old man conspires to elect the factory's union shop chairman, “Big” Li--a chronic ailer--as head of the so-called sports committee, Big Li's boundless enthusiasm for any work overcomes his physical ineptitude, creating a quandary for Old Li, and a number of hilarious situations.
