The Big Steal

“The film is dominated by a hair raising car chase, adroitly directed by Don Siegel. Robert Mitchum, an Army Lieutenant, is framed for robbery and chases the real thief across mouth watering Mexican scenery, whilst he is himself chased. The script by Geoffrey Homes and Gerald Drayson is lively and full of acid exchanges whilst the film's humour and craftsmanship mark it out as more than an average thriller. Made at the time when Mitchum's publicity was built round his narcotics charge, all the scenes with Mitchum were shot in a different season to the rest of the film. It doesn't show.” --National Film Theatre (London)
