Born Reckless

"Ford himself (afflicted at the time with production supervisors and assistants who were convinced that the old-guard directors didn't understand the new medium of sound) never liked this film, claims that he only made it as a routine, obedient assignment, and really enjoyed only the boisterous non-scripted comedy interpolations that he added during the shooting. Unquestionably it's lesser Ford, but it's also recognizable Ford, a substantial improvement over his prior sound film The Black Watch, and both slicker and better than many of the other Fox releases of the same year. The plot, an intriguing mixture of World War One with gangsterism, pre- and postwar, looks more like a Walsh or Hawks film, and might even have been intended for one of them." -William K. Everson
