Bread Day
Preceded by short: The Bathhouse (Rimantas Gruodis, Lithuania, 1997)Elderly men and women gather at a century-old Lithuanian bathhouse, taking their ritual baths and gossiping. Captured in exquisite still-life images, the faded beauty and decaying splendor of the bathhouse provide a melancholy contrast to the chaos of the world outside, and sadly reflect the aging of its clientele. (10 mins, In Lithuanian with English subtitles, Video, Courtesy Studio Periferija)Bread Day, a hypnotic, nearly absurd documentary, immerses the viewer in an isolated, frozen village on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, where all forms of warmth, whether physical or emotional, seem to have disappeared. A group of perpetually bickering villagers push a boxcar down abandoned traintracks. A dog bites at its own puppies. Townspeople hurl insults and abuse in the bread shop. Goats lick one another. A drunkard leers at the camera, uncertain whether to appease or threaten. Shot in perfect stillness, Bread Day captures a Slavic world of stasis and ice, where humanity exists out of sheer spite.
