Breakfast at Tiffany's
In the simple black sheath with the moon(river)-shaped neck and cutaway shoulders, the multiple strands of pearls, the cigarette holder, and for visiting Sing Sing a large blue hat, Audrey Hepburn put the fifties bombshell in her place, and probably did as much for anorexia as she did for giant sunglasses. Breakfast at Tiffany's would set the trend for the sixties and beyond. It didn't matter that Holly Golightly was "a phony"-a bumpkin in Manhattan-"but a real phony," in fact it helped, not to bother with the suspension of disbelief. What did seem real was the elegance of Givenchy-like Tiffany's, "the quietness, the pride of it." As in Sabrina, Edith Head designed for the other woman, here Patricia Neal playing George Peppard's interior decorator and gigolee. And what a piece of work she is, blue capes against red hair. Talk about the built environment. (JB)
