Broadway Melody of 1938

The Broadway Melody musicals were to MGM what the Gold Diggers were to Warner Brothers and the Big Broadcasts were to Paramount: a showcase for their top musical stars, and a chance to exploit new talent. But history was made when, in Broadway Melody of 1938, 15-year-old Judy Garland, looking every bit the normal American lass down to her bobby sox, belted out an ode to a photograph of Clark Gable, “Dear Mr. Gable,” sung to the tune of “You Made Me Love You.” “Metro's challenge to Deanna Durbin” stole the show even from her own co-stars--the delightfully gangly Buddy Ebsen, Eleanor Powell, and Robert Taylor. Songs by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown.
