Broken Arrow

In this 1950 Delmer Daves Western, Jimmy Stewart plays an ex-Union officer who befriends the Arizonan Apaches, besieged by renegades from both armies after the Civil War, and marries an Apache princess. Jeff Chandler plays the Apache leader, Cochise. Gordon Gow writes, in “Hollywood in the Fifties,” “Hollywood got around to the subject (of segregation) typically, by way of the Old West, thinking itself very advanced in 1950 when the Indian as villain was firmly expunged by Jeff Chandler's sympathetic portrayal of the Apache leader, Cochise...,” and Pauline Kael claims “(Broken Arrow) has probably done more to soften racial hostilities than most movies designed to instruct, indict, and inspire.... That Indian princess was no squaw....” (in “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”)
