THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN

This is the ultimate retirement film! A cult of aging satanists need new bodies to occupy, so they take up residence in a small California town and proceed to snatch up all the youngsters. Mayhem engulfs the quiet parish as the possessed kiddies look at life from both cides now, matricide and patricide. The oily presence of Strother Martin as leader of the pact is central to the BS. In his first starring role, smarmy Martin sputters his way through a black mass of monologues with devilish sincerity. (This would only be outdone in his next rollicking role as the mad doctor in 1973's SSSSSSS.) “You who have the power to bridge death and life...” he intones in his signature snivelling whine. Crushing tanks, maniacal dolls, and jousting knights, all spawned from tiny toys, add to the chilling atmosphere, as does the local icehouse where Sheriff Hillsboro (played by the ever-reliable L.Q. Jones) keeps the day's stiffs stiff.
