The Brothers

"Although based on a novel by L.A.G. Strong that had been filmed in the silent period, this remake undoubtedly came about because its story (set on the isle of Skye) had remarkable parallels to the recently successful Duel in the Sun, and because it was ideally suited to the British school of film noir. We showed the American release version of this film some years back (reluctantly, because it was then the only print available), but pointing out how much it had been cut, changed, re-shot and ultimately bowdlerized by a ludicrous happy ending replacing the original tragic one. Here is perhaps your only chance to see the film in its original uncut form, and in a fine 35mm print" (William K. Everson). Patricia Roc portrays a feisty servant in a rural Scottish household whose presence revives a generations-old feud, and sets brother against jealous brother.
