The culminating episode of the Trilogy (see notes for September 28) is fully appreciable by those who missed the first two parts. The story continues after a 20-year jump; Fanny (Orane Demazis) is married to an aging Panisse (Charpin), with a grown son who does not yet know that his real father is Marius (Pierre Fresnay), who left Fanny for a life of seafaring adventure. The one who knows all and provides the film with its richest illumination is César (Raimu), patriarch of Pagnol's Provençal gallery of all-too-human types.
