Cabaret Mineiro (CANCELLED; replaced with Antonio Das Mortes -- Glauber Rocha)
An internationally known film crew, including cinematographer Murilo Salles (Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands) and musician Tavinho Moura (whose group includes Milton Nascimento) have participated with director Carlos Alberto Prates Correia in making a film about one of Brazil's more remote cultures--that of Minas Geraes. Both the music and the film style seem to be unique to this culture--for that, the film is fascinating, and unlike anything we have yet seen from Brazil. Variety's glowing review of Cabaret Mineiro compares Minas Geraes for Brazil to what Sicily is for Italy, and calls the film “an orchestration of a number of Mineiro situations and behaviors, as well as an hallucinated view of a man comprised between his dreams and the reality, the romantic values of the past, the coldness of the present and an anguishing world in between. Dialogue is often poetic and the whole story develops in its own space....”
