The Cabinet of the Brothers Quay, Program 2

New Prints!

Our second foray into the curious world of the Quay Brothers' shorts includes their most famous work, Street of Crocodiles. Based on a short story by Bruno Schulz, it's “a landmark of rust, haunted screws, raw meat, and mysterious provocation that arguably stands as the most sublime piece of frame-by-frame filmmaking yet accomplished” (Michael Atkinson, Village Voice). Also featured are two more entries in the Stille Nacht series; a collaboration with avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen; and an animated lecture on artistic illusion. The most recent short on the program, The Phantom Museum, is an imaginative exploration of Sir Henry Wellcome's trove of medical curiosities, a perfect match of subject matter to the Quays' inimitable sensibility.
