Captain Blackjack (Black Jack)

"One of the films requested by members of the PFA audience! While clearly representing Duvivier on the decline after the peak of Poil de carotte, it's quite absorbing as an example of the many rather sour combinations of adventure thriller and film noir set in Europe right after the war. Presumably the American release version was edited somewhat, and the sound track, though perfectly audible, has a cheap and unprofessional ring to it, so one must give Duvivier the benefit of the doubt and assume that in its original form it was more impressive. Even as it is, the interesting locations and the strong cast keep this tale of international crime and drug-smuggling lively and interesting. Given only a brief flurry of exhibition on its initial release, it has not had a revival of any kind in many years." -William K. Everson
