A gifted connoisseur of the repressed, Winnipeg-based Guy Maddin delivers his weird, droll narratives of unseemly passion as though they're spliced together from hallucinated fragments of early Nordic cinema. In the alpine village of Tolzbad a mere whisper can unleash an avalanche; a mere tremble of passion is life-threatening. Studious young men attend butler school and everything is as it ought to be until one of their number is visited by an incestuous dream about his mother. Soon all manner of unthinkable fixations, fetishes, insanities, and purple filters are unleashed in a flickering frenzy of disgrace. Maddin: "This is a pro-repression movie....Perhaps too many closets have been opened...the more secrets there are, the more illicit our pleasures will be...and the place will just look smarter."-Wellington Film Festival
