Caught (Tentative) (CANCELLED)

We are trying very hard to obtain a print of Ophuls' Le Roman de Werther, a 1938 adaptation of Goethe's novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. This rare and exceptionally fine film, although in French with German subtitles, is not difficult to follow, especially for those familiar with Goethe's novel. As we go to press, we are unable to confirm our presentation of Le Roman de Werther, and so have tentatively scheduled Ophuls' Caught. Please call the PFA office at 642-1412 close to show-date for confirmation.

One of Ophuls' more obscure American features, Caught is a dark melodrama that masterfully fuses familiar Ophulsian love themes with an astute European's observations on American domestic life in the postwar period, infected by social ambitions and illusions. Barbara Bel Geddes plays a charm school graduate caught between her psychotic millionaire husband (Robert Ryan) and a struggling young ghetto doctor (James Mason). Lee Garmes' camerawork is Wellesian in its unusual angles, deep focus and expressive lighting.
