One of the darkest comedies in the Italian series, this depicts the discovery by a hapless thief that prison life is far less brutal than society. Nino Manfredi stars as the taxi-driver Giacinto Rossi, whose perennial poverty and family problems drive him to thievery and whose ineptitude lands him in jail. In a cell with three thugs who dream of escape, Giacinto unwittingly becomes the instrument of their freedom, and his own. Arriving penniless at his home, where his wife lives with another man, he ultimately must allow his replacement to turn him in for the reward, simply to save his family from starvation. Giacinto's life is downbeat, but the film is decidedly offbeat, and a natural for the comic talents of Manfredi and a colorful cast.
