Ceiling Zero
This rarely seen Howard Hawks film is the best of the James Cagney/Pat O'Brien vehicles. Cagney plays Dizzy Davis, a daredevil flier--loose with rules and regulations--who works for Jack Lee (O'Brien), operations manager of a commercial airline (when such things were new). Brilliantly adapted from Jack Wead's play, the film evolves as a contrast of personalities and lifestyles. When Dizzy ducks out on a flying assignment to keep a date, the resulting events show that there's no room for his individualistic style in the bureaucratic world of commercial aviation. While Hawks' classic theme of responsibility to the group is central, it is tinged with regret that the pioneers of aviation, men like Dizzy with "the right stuff," must make way for the new breed of reliable, dependable pilots, willing to follow orders.
