Chekhov in My Life (Tschechow in meinem Leben)

"(Filmmaker Vadim Glowna) and his wife, Vera Tschechowa, the great grand-niece of the great Russian writer Anton Chekhov, went to Moscow in search of traces of the poet. The two provoked a kind of documentary. A subjective and intimate modern Moscow emerges, quite different from that glimpsed through Western images of official meetings, parades, Red Square and the Kremlin. Chekhov lives on in a sort of 'Chekhov land' as family members, theatre people, writers and others remember and pass on part of her heritage to Vera. Much of the film is surprisingly funny. Chekhov in My Life is a 'small' film, but astonishingly moving and intelligent." David Overbey, Toronto Festival of Festivals '85.
