Chilly Nights (Han Ye)
“Chilly Nights is the story of a love affair set against a background of war and privation in 1944 Chongqing (capital of unoccupied China). While Wang Wenxuan ekes out a living copying documents by hand, his attractive wife Shusheng is able to earn many times his salary as a paid companion to a wealthy banker.... This adaptation of a novel by Ba Jin (China's foremost living writer) is remarkable in its evocation of time and place. The period detail is meticulous (even down to Christmas Eve in war-time China) and the photography wonderfully expressive in conveying life amidst the darkness of a city whose lights were often blacked out due to Japanese bombing raids. Above all, it is the characters who stand out--and the feelings and emotions between Wang and Shusheng are testimony to the fact that love can survive, even thrive, in the most adverse circumstances.” Steve Horowitz, San Francisco International Film Festival '85
