Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Most of Rosi's films are chronicles of deaths foretold-their suspense lies not in the buildup but in the breakdown, the discovery of meanings and motives behind man's tendency to violence. And like all of his films, Chronicle is a film against violence and the forces "that can transform a rational man into an assassin." (Rosi) Based on the famous novel by Gabriel García Marquez, set and filmed in Colombia, it tells of twin brothers in a sleepy backwater who vow to kill the young man they think has violated their sister's virginity. They do so, with the tacit approval of the villagers. The story's complex, mosaic-like structure (this time taken from the source novel itself) functions as an inquest into the crime, as well as into memory, the certainty of death and the uncertainty of truth.
