Cinema for the Ear: Audio Art by Film and Video Artists
"Seeing with one's ears isn't difficult, merely expensive: Convert your eyes to your ears, your ears to your eyes, at the most au courant exchange rates. Then taste, touch, smell as your nouveau enriched soul sprouts ocular appendages to either side of that old shoulder-filler, your head. Now see/hear with lid-less, lobe-less attention."-Stuart Sherman Tonight's program will keep you in the dark?for almost the entire evening. Rather than a viewing experience, we will provide a listening one, feauring audio art pieces by artists involved in the film/video world. Varying from cut-ups of existing audio works, collages constructed from film sound tracks, to "verité" recordings and intricate samplings of the aural world, these audio art pieces allow us to "sound out" visual artists' non-visual experiments. Audio art by Abigail Child, Michel Chion, Kevin Deal, Bradley Eros, Nina Fonoroff, Vincent Grenier, (Ken Jacobs,) Lynn Kirby, Richard Lerman, Jeanne Liotta, Julie Murray, Public Works (Ralph Johnson, Lloyd Dunn), Peter Rose, Lynne Sachs, Stuart Sherman, Jack Smith, and Caspar Stacke will be presented. Also included will be the performance "AFront" by the local group Wet Gate (Peter Conheim, Steven Dye, Owen O'Toole) who "perform pieces for multiple 16mm sound projectors as a 'band' which uses projectors like musical instruments?Tonight's performance will be small pictures, BIG SOUND-a deliberate reversal of the standard cinema experience."
