Clando

Teno's fiction-film debut follows a Cameroonian man faced with a choice endemic to African youth: whether to stay in their country and fight against corruption, or flee to Europe for a hoped-for easier life. The film begins in the whirl and dust of the streets of Douala, where Sobgui drives an illegal taxicab to make ends meet. Haunted by memories of his torture by the police for assisting antigovernment forces, Sobgui may be free from one jail, but not from the prison his country has become. Fleeing to Germany, he begins an affair with a German human rights activist, and takes refuge with fellow Cameroonian expatriates waiting for something to change in their native land. Teno balances Clando's eye–on–the–ground grit with a call to action for his countrymen. "A majority of Africans are waiting, waiting for change to happen," Teno says, but a simple decision can break that spell.
