Cluny Brown

Cluny Brown (Jennifer Jones) is a working class girl, a London plumber's niece, who doesn't know her place: she aspires to plumbing, herself. Sent by her uncle into a more appropriate line of work, as a maid to a wealthy family, she finds a friend and iconoclastic ally in an elegant, intellectual scrounger, played by Charles Boyer. Together they frustrate convention, and provide a center for Ernst Lubitsch's twinklingly mischievous satire on English propriety of both classes. A clever screenplay balances bite with innuendo and good-natured comedy, and as a spotter of English "types," Lubitsch is tops. (JB)
