College Days
“Marceline Day, Buster Keaton's co-star in The Cameraman stars in this pleasant campus hijinks comedy. There is all the bootleg liquor, fast driving and rah-rah football that one expects from the Roaring Twenties. The story takes place at the University of California's Los Angeles campus (located at the time on Vermont Avenue, the present location of Los Angeles City College). This was one of Richard Thorpe's earliest films in a directing career that lasted from 1924 to 1967 and included such disparate films as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1939)...and Jailhouse Rock (1957). College Days had been unseen for many years. Four reels of original negative were donated to the UCLA Film Archives a few years ago. The Library of Congress was contacted about the project and provided an incomplete nitrate print in poor condition. Last year a private collector with a fairly complete print loaned us his material, which was in 28mm, an obsolete home movie format. This print had to be rephotographed onto 35mm film one frame at a time. A new negative of the best picture material available from all three sources was finally assembled, and the movie has been restored to its original eight reels.” John Tirpak, UCLA Film Archives
