Conductor 1492
Johnny Hines began in the Fort Lee studios in the early teens as a genial and mildly comic second lead, and quickly became his own producer and star of East Coast-produced feature comedies. He was immensely popular in his brash, optimistic go-getter roles, but his East Coast-produced comedies, many of which still survive, suffered from production economies that did not always showcase his talents well. Conductor 1492 however is a bigger-scale, West Coast-produced feature for Warners and is a kissing cousin of Harold Lloyd's later Speedy. The Irish ethnic humor is vigorous and rambunctious, the action is fast, and there's a whale of a red-tinted fire climax. William K. Everson
